Martin F. Puris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Puris and Partners, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in advertising.
Originally a satirist and comedian, advertising legend Martin Puris has spent the last several years working with a rapidly changing advertising landscape, and continues to helm his own firm with the goal of finding the great story behind his clients’ firms. Mr. Puris is best known for giving BMW its famous tagline, “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” which started as a small $800 thousand campaign and grew into the company’s identity for more than 40 years. He still finds joy in being a storyteller and a copywriter, with the same curiosity he had when he entered the industry in 1962.
Born to Martin Puris and Virginia Lee Puris in Chicago, Mr. Puris the younger studied with DePauw University and entered advertising as a radio commercial freelancer. He was with Campbell-Ewald Company in Detroit until 1964, and took a fateful offer to work with Young and Rubicam Inc. in New York that year. In short time, he became vice president of Carl Ally Inc. in 1966, the golden age of the “Mad Men” of Madison Avenue that created some of the most memorable advertising ideas of the decade. In 1974, Mr. Puris formed Ammirati and Puris, later Ammirati, Puris, Lintas, where he was chief executive officer, chairman, and former president. He attributes much of his success to his prestigious clientele, which have included UPS, Club Med, Compaq Computers, Steve Jobs, Burger King, and Aetna.
Mr. Puris has been acknowledged for his acumen with a media advisor’s position with the administration of President George H. W. Bush, and has also offered his time as a director of the board of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He is the treasurer of the legacy horse show, the Hampton Classic, and enjoys horseback riding in his free time as well as sailing with various yacht clubs. Mr. Puris was inducted into the One Club Creative Hall of Fame in 2013, and has received awards at the Cannes Film Festival. He is the author of “Comeback: How Seven Straight-Shooting CEO’s Turned Around Troubled Companies” and the father of Kimberly Mayo, Jason Patterson, and Mary Elizabeth. Mr. Puris is married to Mary M. Herrmann.
