Thomas S. Woods, Chief Executive Officer of Tom Woods, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Management Consulting.
The highlight of Mr. Woods’ career was moving from manufacturing to management consulting, and he now provides quality assurance and reliability services for everything from microchips to nuclear submarines. He attributes his success to luck and the good fortune to have mentors like Dorian Shanin at Rath & Strong Inc., from whom he learned a highly specialized technique called variation research. He then wrote a computer program to perform the required statistical analysis. Mr. Woods provides his services in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America. He was selected for the pages of the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
Mr. Woods became involved in his profession while serving to the rank of lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1952, working on the quality and reliability of jet and reciprocating engines. He had already earned an AB from Harvard University, and by the time he left the Air Force he had earned a MBA from the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard. Mr. Woods has worked with legacy companies like Goodyear, served as director of quality assurance and reliability services for Rath & Strong, Inc., and served as vice president of the consultation firm of Reddy, Traver & Woods Inc. for many years. He became president of Tom Woods Inc. in Winnetka, Illinois, in 1985. Mr. Woods is certified as a management consultant with the Institute of Management Consultants, and holds a seat with the institute’s board at the Chicago chapter.
In coming years, Mr. Woods hopes to continue to give back to others using his ability to diagnose the root causes of quality problems. He has already given much of his time to the next generation of management professionals as a faculty member of Harvard Business School, and as a teacher of quality assurance at the University of Connecticut, the University of Akron, and Motorola University. Mr. Woods serves his civic duty as a volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Foundation and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. He has been in management and manufacturing for 44 years, and is a member of the American Society for Quality Control, the American National Standards Committee on Quality Assurance, and the Marsh Islands board of directors. Mr. Woods is the proud father of Brooke, Lawrence, and David with his late wife, Patricia.
