Mr. Gundersen is the founder and chairman of the board of directors of Petroleum Synergy, which he started in 1988. He has been an energy executive for 43 years, ever since he started working as a foreign operations advisor with Standard Oil California in 1974. Mr. Gundersen is a retired member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of the Chancellor’s Society of the University of Nebraska Foundation in 2015, a trustee of the foundation in 2010, and a distinguished alumni of the university’s Burnett Society in 2012. He is an honored Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert, and was featured in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born in Elgin, Illinois to LeRoy Arthur Gundersen and Jean Ellen Gundersen, Mr. Gundersen attended the University of Nebraska to earn a BS in 1959 and an MS in 1961. He worked with Standard Oil until 1976, when he joined Chevron Overseas Petroleum as an assistant, rising to the title of vice president. Mr. Gundersen lent his expertise to Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. in 1980, and rose to become vice president of the firm in 1983. He was named president of Kaiser Energy, as well as Kaiser Aluminum Exploration Co. and Kaiser Exploration and Mining Co. in Oakland, California. Since 1987, Mr. Gundersen has been a consultant since 1987, and currently leads Petroleum Synergy as chief executive officer.
Early in his youth, Mr. Gundersen was named a Sinclair Fellow from 1960 to 1961, and was later declared 1973 Man of the Year by New Orleans Jaycees. He is a distinguished alumni of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska, former president of the Parents Club of Foothill School in Walnut Creek, California, and a former member of the Geology Advisory Board of the University of Nebraska. Mr. Gundersen is also the proud father of Thomas Dexter, Lori Ann, and Kathy Lee with his wife, Gail Andrews.
