Lesley L. Israel, Retired Political Consultant, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Politics.
Named one of the 1990 Most Powerful Women of Washington Magazine and most recently appointed by President Barack Obama to the 2016 U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, Ms. Israel has been a dynamic figure in U.S. politics since she joined the Hubert Humphrey presidential bid as a media advance director in 1967. She later lent her assistance to the Birch Bayh Jr., Henry M. Jackson, and Ted Kennedy campaigns, which propelled her to senior vice president of the Kamber Group. In 1987, she became the chief executive officer and president of Politics Inc. in Washington DC, and served through 1995. Today, Ms. Israel remains an international election expert retained by the U.S. Department of State, as well as a member of the executive commission of the Anti-Defamation League and the Democratic Site Selection Committee, among numerous roles in Washington.
Born to Herman Albert and Florence Lowe in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love and home to the Liberty Bell, Ms. Israel attended Smith College to earn a BA in 1959. She became involved with politics early on, and twice worked for the Hubert Humphrey campaign, the second time as a political intelligence director. She has been involved with the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, the Democratic Charter Commission, and the Democratic Delegate Selection Commission since the early ‘80s, quickly becoming a seasoned veteran of American politics.
Ms. Israel is the former chairman of the Washington Board of the American Friends of Tel Aviv University, and on the board of managers of the Adas Israel Congregation. She received a 1984 Special Service Award from the Jewish Community Center, and was selected for the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Politics, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who of American Women. She is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Ms. Israel married Fred Israel in 1960, and is the proud mother of Herman Allen and Sanford Lawrence.
