Zane V. Akins, President of Zane Akins and Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Agriculture.
Mr. Akins has led his company since 1991, after serving the Holstein Association of America, now Holstein Association U.S.A., as chief executive officer from 1978 to 1990. He is also a partner of the Akins Financial Group, chairman of the board of National Integrated Techs. Inc, president of Vermont Natural Food Products Inc. and A&S Associates Ltd. Mr. Akins started out as a farmer, and delved into breeding, sire development, and management, ultimately working his way into an executive role. He is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born in Bethel, Kansas to Gerald Vernon Akins and Vesta Jean Akins, Mr. Akins’ goal in life is to help people. He earned a BS In agriculture from the University of Missouri, and after being a farmer for two years, joined the Northern Ohio Breeders Association in 1964 as a service technician. He joined the Holstein Association in 1966, and led several companies over the years as an agriculture executive. Mr. Akins also worked as a real estate agent, and was the chairman of the board for the Northeast Delta Dental Association from 1999 to 2004. He holds numerous memberships with industry societies, notably as secretary-treasurer of the National Pedigree Livestock Council since 1989.
Mr. Akins achieved his goal of helping others as a corporator of the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital from 1980 to 2009. He also served as member and treasurer of the Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro. He was the president of the Windham County Humane Society, and has supported United Way of Windham County. Mr. Akins is the recipient of numerous industry awards, including the 2012 Dairy Leadership Award from the National Pedigree Livestock Council and the honorary rank of Kentucky Colonel in 2014. He is an inductee of the Alpha Gamma Rho Hall of Fame, as well as the Missouri High School Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Centennial Honor Roll of Alpha Zeta in 1997. Mr. Akins is the husband of Kay Ellen Cowan, who passed away in 2013. The couple had Michael Scott, Deborah Lynn, and Christie Sue, who gave them their grandchildren Kathryn, Steven, Drew, Stephanie, Georgia, Colby, and Riley. In his free time, Mr. Akins enjoys biking and golfing.
