George E. “Gene” McDavid, Publishing Executive at the Houston Chronicle, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Press.
Mr. McDavid fondly recalls when President George Bush appointed him as chair of the board of regents for the University of Houston in 1998. He remembers receiving a call from Bush’s secretary, and being notified that one of Bush’s lieutenants had suggested Mr. McDavid as a possible candidate. He traveled to Austin for three different interviews, was asked to fill out a questionnaire, and ultimately took the job for two terms of three years each. It was very rewarding and he got involved in a level of things that he would not have had a previous opportunity to do, including the chance to testify. He met people and solved problems he never would have without that position. To take on the role, Mr. McDavid retired from a successful position as an executive of the Houston Chronicle.
Born to O.C. McDavid and Inez S. McDavid in McComb, Mississippi, Mr. McDavid became the owner of the Wilk Amite Record in Gloster, Mississippi, at the age of 19. He ran the paper until 1958, and in 1965 he graduated from the University of Houston with a BBA, cum laude. Mr. McDavid joined the Houston Chronicle two years later, rising steadily to the position of president in 1990. He is a former president of the Southwest Wch. Printing management and an advisory board member of the American Press Institute. He has also supported numerous civic organizations, and still serves as chairman of the board of regents of the American Cancer Society in the Houston region.
Mr. McDavid is recognized as a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert, and was selected for the pages of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Entertainment, Who’s Who in the Media and Communication. He was named to the Mississippi Journal Hall of Fame in 2002, as well as 1996 Houston Father of the Year and 1973 Outstanding Ex-Citizen of Gloster. Mr. McDavid is the recipient of a 1993 Man of the Year Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, a 1992 Taggart Award from Texas Newspaper, a 1961 Franklin Award, as well as 1997 and 1990 Distinguished Alumnus Awards from the University of Houston.
