During his high school days, Dr. Stith worked part time at an old fashioned orphanage, and by the time he entered college he knew that he wanted to work in mental health. He has always had a passion for trying to find a better way to help families without being intrusive in their lives, and still chooses to be effective without having children taken out of the home or put in a hospital. Dr. Stith holds a PhD in clinical psychology from Saint Louis University. He was a psychologist in the St. Louis State Hospital from 1968 to 1970, and worked as deputy director of Weld County Mental Health from 1971 to 1978. He joined Aurora Mental Health Center in 1978.

During the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting, Dr. Stith was living in the area, and responded to the event by placing the community and families of Aurora at his center’s primary responsibility. He is proud of his staff and community, who pulled together to cope with the tragedy. Today, Dr. Stith still lives in the area. He and his wife have 11 grandchildren, and together they enjoy travel and the grandchildren’s various events, including sports, dance, drama, and plays.
