Mr. Gable took on his family’s business in 1970 as the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company in Kentucky, and has also given his time to education and public administration. He was invited to Frankfort, Kentucky to serve as commissioner of state parks, and has been a board member of the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Gable is proud of his role in merging the George Peabody College into Vanderbilt University, and has always been open to new opportunities to serve. He is a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert and a recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born in New York, New York to Gilbert Elledy and Paulina (Stearns) Gable, Mr. Gable attended Stanford University to earn a BS in 1956, and served to the rank of lieutenant, junior grade, with the U.S. Naval Reserve. He also holds the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel and Mr. Coal of Kentucky. In addition to his family business, he is a director emeritus of Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky, and a former director of the Bank of McCreary County. From 1979 to 1981, he was the director of the audit committee for Kuhn’s Big K Stores Corporation in Nashville. Mr. Gable is also a former chairman and board director of Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, as well as former chair of Lumber King Inc.
Mr. Gable has been a longstanding contributor to politics, and is currently a member of the Kentucky State Board of Elections and the Kentucky Republican Central Committee. He was president and chief executive officer of Kentuckians for Fair Redistricting from 2001 to 2003, and was a candidate for governor of Kentucky in 1995. Among numerous civic and professional roles, Mr. Gable has found time for tennis, reading, and travel. He is the proud father of James Stearns, Elizabeth Brenton, and John Stearns with his late wife, Emily Brinton Thompson. Mr. Gable is also the grandfather of Helen-Anne Stearns Gable.
