Alison Mavis Engelbrecht, Chief Executive Officer at Women in Business, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Entrepreneurship.
Ms. Engelbrecht is a passionate advocate for the education and encouragement of women in entrepreneurship, and endeavors to help women be different and to step outside the mold created by society. In addition to becoming CEO of Women in Business in 2005, she is the current vice principal of Varsity College in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and has worked in the region as an educator and business leader since 1980. Ms. Engelbrecht feels she has benefited from similar encouragement from her own mentors, and believes in the entrepreneurial ability of women everywhere. She lives by a quote from Zig Ziglar that “you will get all you want in life, if you help other people get what they want.”
An alumna of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Ms. Engelbrecht earned a HDE in 1980 and later graduated from the University of South Africa with a B.Ed., with honors, in 2014. She started teaching with Carter High School in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and went on to a position as senior lecturer of the commercial department at Plessislaer Technical College nearby. From 1992 to 1998, she served as vice principal of the department of education at the Dabulamanzi Combined School, and worked with Ali Cat’s Accounting and Business Services from 1998 to 2013. Since then, she has focused on entrepreneurship for women and teaching financial literacy with Varsity College.
In coming years, Ms. Engelbrecht hopes to enter politics and help lead the charge for women’s rights in the workplace. She is proud of her work and the awards it has earned, both from her peers and the immeasurable emotional and subjective rewards. In addition to seeing women grow in confidence and business, Ms. Engelbrecht has been named one of South Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government, as well as a Pioneer in the Field of Entrepreneurship by ITC Women Pioneers Summit. She has supported numerous professional societies, notably as a mentor and mentee of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, and as director of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business. In her free time, Ms. Engelbrecht enjoys long-distance walks and driving her Land Rover.
