Richard Charles Brainerd, Consultant, Educator and Human Resources Executive, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in human resources.
Mr. Brainerd began his career in 1968 as a personnel analyst for the Wisconsin Bureau Personnel, where he learned the trade for six years before moving on to a role with the Wisconsin Department of Justice. While there, he served as director of personnel and assistant administrator for administration. Now a leader in his field, Mr. Brainerd looks back on the early years of his career as the building blocks of the expertise he possesses today. Other roles he has held include deputy commissioner of personnel for the Minnesota Department of Employee Relations, director of personnel in Ramsey County, human resources director for the Metropolitan Council, and director of human resources for the American Red Cross. Before retiring in 2014, Mr. Brainerd consulted in the field of human resources for five years.
In addition to his primary positions, Mr. Brainerd worked to educate others in his industry. He was an instructor for the employer education service program at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. Additionally, he was co-chair and member of the executive board for Twin Cities Area Labor Management Council, advisor for the Institute for Labor Management Studies at White Bear Lake, speaker on human relations, and consultant for Qualified Neutral Alternate Dispute Resolution.
Active in his community, Mr. Brainerd has served as an elected city council member for the City of Mahtomedi, where he helped establish the policies of the city of about 10,000 people. Previously, he was a member of the regional nature conservancy board for the Minnesota Parks and Trails Council, president of the Minnesota Regional Red Cross Board, and vice chair of a policy group on conservation.
Mr. Brainerd holds a Bachelor of Science in business and economics from the University of Wisconsin, which he earned in 1968. As he progressed in his career, he continued to build his skill set by taking ongoing coursework in leadership development from the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC. Additionally, Mr. Brainerd has participated in projects and initiatives within his professional community. He is a member of the Public Employer Labor Relations Association, and the International Public Management Association on Human Resources. Looking toward the future, Mr. Brainerd plans to consult in the field of human resources on select projects while enjoying his well-deserved retirement.
