Amb. John R. Malott, Retired United States Ambassador, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in public service.

With nearly 50 years of professional experience in his field, Mr. Malott is currently retired, having most recently served as president of the Japan American Society from 2006 to 2017. Attributing his success to the influence of his father, a medical doctor, Mr. Malott specialized in South Asian-American affairs in Washington, D.C., as well as a myriad of other notable positions. Prior to his closing role, he was a senior advisor of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, and managing director of Manatt Jones Global Strategies from 2003 to 2006, president of the Orange County World Affairs Council from 2000 to 2002, executive chairman of Malott & Associates from 1999 to 2006, and the U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia with the U.S. Department of State from 1995 to 1998.

Holding a number of prestigious positions throughout his career, Mr. Malott spent much of his time in such roles as director of Japan affairs, American Consul General in Osaka, Japan, special assistant to the Secretary of State of Economic Affairs, American Consul in Bombay, India, and the Sri Lanka and India desk officer with the U.S. Department of State. He commenced his career as a civilian advisor with the U.S. Department of State in Vietnam, a China desk officer with the U.S. Department of State, and American Consul with the U.S. Department of State in Kobe, Japan.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in 1967 and graduating from the National War College in 1983, Mr. Malott is the author of the book “Partners,” published in 1992. In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, he has accrued several accolades throughout his diverse and impressive career. The recipient of the Superior Honor Award in 1991, he was honored with the Meritorious Honor Award by the U.S. Department of State in 1982. In 1970, he was also presented with the Vietnam Service Award. In addition, Mr. Malott was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. Married to the late Hiroko Iwami, he is the proud father of two children and four grandchildren.
