A partner of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP since 2012, he previously served as partner of Bingham & McCutchen LLP from 2010 to 2012 and as chair and chief executive officer of Astoria Generating Company from 2006 to 2008. Prior to these appointments, he held the role of chair and chief executive officer of Eastern Generation LLC from 2003 to 2008, managing director of the finance sector and global project head of Société Générale from 1998 to 2003, and finance project lead of Société Générale from 1996 to 1998. In addition to practicing law, Mr. Worenklein is the Chairman and CEO of US Grid Company, an electric power company focused on creating a more efficient and resilient electric power system in the US. He is noted in this venture for preventing the shutdown of the Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant in 2016. Furthermore, he is the Chairman of Ravenswood Power Holdings, a firm which owns and operates the largest fossil power plant in New York State.
Mr. Worenklein formerly worked with Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc., in a number of capacities, acting as managing director of the finance group and group head of global projects with the finance group from 1993 to 1996. He additionally held several roles with Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, LLP, at the beginning of his career, including senior advisor from 1993 to 1994, executive committeeman from 1990 to 1993, chair of the firm planning committee from 1988 to 1990, and associate and partner from 1973 to 1993.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Worenklein has acted as a member of Actis since 2008 and GridPoint since 2005. He is a former member of Ember Technologies, Inc., Entech Solar, Inc., Entegra Corporation, Ormat, and he sat on the board of directors and audit committee of CDC Globeleq from 2004 to 2008. He was also a member of the advisory council with Amoco Power Resources Corporation from 1995 to 1997, member of the investment banking management committee with Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc., from 1993 to 1996, and an adjunct professor of finance in the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Mr. Worenklein pursued a formal education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1969. He went on to study at New York University, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence and a Master of Business Administration in 1973. He has been admitted to practice in the state of New York. In 2002, Mr. Worenklein received his first Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by the Infrastructure Journal in London.
Mr. Worenklein has participated in a number of civic engagements throughout his career as well, acting as a member of the executive committee and trustee of JCRC-NY, Inc., since 2011 and on the committee for economic development of JCRC-NY, Inc., since 2001. The chair of the board of Old Broadway Synagogue since 2001, he was the president of Old Broadway Synagogue from 1978 to 2001. In addition, he has served the UJA-Federation of New York in several capacities as a member of the board of directors from 1991 to 1997, chair of the lawyers division from 1991 to 1993, chair of the lawyers division for major gifts from 1989 to 1991, member of the board of overseers in 1987, and trustee from 1984 to 1986. Furthermore, Mr. Worenklein is the Chairman of the Interfaith Alliance, a national organization dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s constitutional protections.
A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Mr. Worenklein has also been a prolific author, contributing several articles to professional journals. In addition, he has been an editorial board member for the Journal for Structured and Project Finance since 1996.
