Robert W. Schaefer, CPA, Comptroller at the First National Bank of Maryland, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in accounting.
Mr. Schaefer is a celebrated accountant who amassed 62 years of professional experience prior to his retirement in 2013. Most recently working as the executive director of the France-Merrick Foundation in Baltimore, MD, from 1996 to 2013, he spent the majority of his career with the First National Bank of Maryland as the executive vice president, senior financial executive and comptroller between 1951 and 1996. Alongside his primary roles, he also acted as senior vice president, vice president and associate with the bank beginning in 1951.
In addition to his positions at the bank, Mr. Schaefer was the chair of the investment committee for the State of Maryland from 2007 to 2011, a member of the State of Maryland Retirement System from 2000 to 2011, and a member of the Baltimore City Fire and Police Retirement Team from 2000 to 2011. Likewise, he was an instructor of accounting, economics, taxes and credit at the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Banking from 1960 to 1966 and an adjunct instructor of accounting at North Carolina State University from 1956 to 1958.
Mr. Schaefer has also been involved in a number of civic engagements throughout his career. Since 2014, he has been a member of the finance and development council at GBMC Healthcare, as well as on the board of directors at the Baltu Leadership School for Young Women since 2013, a member of the Maryland Business Advisory Committee since 2013, and on the board of directors at the Independent College Fund of Maryland since 1990. Previously, he was on the council on economic education at the YMCA of Central Maryland in 1992, on the board of directors at the Enoch Pratt Library from 1986 to 1993, and on the board of directors at the Lyric Theater from 1985 to 1996. The treasurer of the Baltimore Area United Fund from 1964 to 1979, he has further been on the board of directors of such entities as McDaniel College, the Baltimore Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Baltimore chapter of the American Red Cross, the Boys Latin School, the Baltimore City Aquarium, the Roland Park Country School and Maryland General Hospital. He also served as a trustee at The Wesley Home, Inc.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Mr. Schaefer pursued an education at Baltimore City College, where he completed coursework from 1948 to 1951. He subsequently attended the University of Baltimore, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting and finance in 1955. Thereafter, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for two years and eventually received a Master of Business Administration from Loyola College in 1971. He is a certified public accountant in the State of Maryland.
In an effort to remain abreast of recent developments within his industry, Mr. Schaefer has maintained affiliation with several organizations, including on the board of directors of the University of Baltimore Alumni Association from 1972 to 2012. He is also associated with Financial Executives International, the Maryland CPA Association, the Bank Administration Institute, the University of Baltimore Foundation, the Johns Hopkins Club, the L’Hirondelle Club and the Valley Country Club.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to accounting and finance, Mr. Schaefer has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World. Married to Elaine Lennon since 1963, he is the proud father of two children, Linda and Karen.
