Michael Gibbens, Retired Assistant Vice President at AT&T, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in telecommunications management.
Mr. Gibbens attended the University of Southern California, earning a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1961. Though aerospace technology had been advancing at that time, Mr. Gibbens had decided he wanted to take his knowledge of electrical engineering to AT&T. He had spoken with people from the Pacific Telephone Company, a division of AT&T, and was recruited to work for them. Entering a management training program designed for recent college graduates, Mr. Gibbens worked in various departments of the company, receiving a promotion to a second-level management position within three years, astonishing and impressing his coworkers.
Within this program, Mr. Gibbens worked in the engineering department, starting at a first level management position and quickly ascending management levels. He has worked in multiple departments including marketing and business sales, voice, data and video operations, budgets and results analysis, and operations data systems development, among others. Recruited to help run a branch in Cooperstown, NY, due to his success and enormous potential, Mr. Gibbons completed the Bell System Data Communications Training Program with AT&T. The AT&T Data Communications Training Program took place in 1963, shortly after Mr. Gibbens began his time with the company. With both a sales and engineering background and having become a district manager in record time, he found great success in Cooperstown. During this time, Mr. Gibbens made a very successful presentation to the vice president of Southern Bell, earning praise from those in management positions in many companies.
Mr. Gibbens has worked for AT&T and multiple divisions of the company from January 1961 to February 1992. He has worked for Pacific Bell in Los Angeles and San Francisco multiple times, holding first through fifth level management positions in operations, marketing, systems development, budget results and personnel from 1961 to 1985. Working as an assistant vice president for Pacific Bell, he was responsible for all new services development and strategic marketing planning, including marketing research, business case development, computer modeling of economics, competitive analysis and technical issues. Furthermore, he was responsible for all new service development and strategic marketing planning for Pacific Bell California and Nevada. In 1987, he left this position, accepting an assistant vice president position with Bell Communications Research, another division of AT&T. Relocating to New Jersey, Mr. Gibbens had been responsible for the development of all the new, inter-company network-based services within the seven Baby Bells.
In addition to his illustrious and inspirational career, Mr. Gibbens has been associated with the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce, various professional and business societies and the University of Southern California Alumni Associations. He has been a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity as well as with the Archimedes Circle. Sharing his knowledge with others, Mr. Gibbens will speak on the subject of telecommunications and his experiences as an accomplished manager. Incredibly skilled in the fields of research, Mr. Gibbens has contributed greatly to AT&T and its divisions, revolutionizing technology with his own electrical engineering expertise.
