Richard M. Stormont, President at The Stormont Companies, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in hotel administration and hospitality.
Amassing more than 60 years of professional excellence in the hospitality industry, Mr. Stormont is the president of The Stormont Companies, Inc., a full-service developer of luxurious and first-class hotels, conference centers and resorts, holding this position since 1984. Alongside this role, he was chairman of Stormont Noble Development LLC from 2004 to 2006 and Stormont Trice Corporation from 1993 to 2000. Mr. Stormont hired his nephew, Jim Stormont Jr., in 1989, who now acts as the owner of The Stormont Hospitality Group. Together, they have opened four new hotels in the past five years, each of them garnering vast success and being managed by the best talent in the hotel management industry.
Prior to delving into his own companies, Mr. Stormont served Marriott Hotels, Inc., in numerous capacities, including as vice president of operations in Washington, DC, from 1981 to 1983, vice president of the Marriott Franchise Division from 1980 to 1983, and general manager in Atlanta, GA, from 1974 to 1979, in Philadelphia, PA, from 1973 to 1974, and in Dallas, TX, from 1971 to 1973. In addition, he held such positions as resident manager, director of sales and assistant sales manager, beginning in 1962. He commenced his career as a food cost analyst and sales representative at Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago, IL, from 1957 to 1958.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Mr. Stormont received a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1958, and subsequently earned certifications in hotel administration and as a hospitals industry professional. The founder of the Georgia Hospitality and Travel Association, he has also served his community in numerous capacities, such as the Rotary Club of Atlanta, where he previously acted as president and secretary between 2005 and 2008. In addition, he was the chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day Society in Atlanta from 2005 to 2016, having previously been involved with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Atlanta Hotel/Motel Association, and the Hotel Sales Management Association.
To remain aware of recent developments within the industry and community, Mr. Stormont maintains affiliation with several organizations, including the Capital City Club of Atlanta, Rotary International in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Dallas, and the Cornell Society. Likewise, he is associated with Southern Innkeepers and Cayuga Hospitality Advisors, Inc. He attributes his success to his many mentors, including his father and J.W. “Bill” Marriott.
As a testament to his professional success, Mr. Stormont has accrued several accolades throughout his career. Named the Southeast Hotelier of the Year by the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in 2006, he was inducted into the Atlanta Hospitality Hall of Fame by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2006, as well as the Hall of Fame by the Georgia Hospitality and Travel Association in 2000. Cited as the Most Valuable Volunteer by the American Hotel and Lodging Association in 1999, he also won the Obi T. Brewer Award from the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau in 1979. Likewise, he was honored as the Distinguished Salesman of the Year and Hotelier of the Year in 1967 and 1977, respectively.
Married to Virginia Louellen Walters since 1959, Mr. Stormont is the proud father of three children and four grandchildren. He has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
