With more than 45 years of professional experience, Dr. Curreri is a dedicated and versatile industry professional who has been serving as the chairman of Strategem of Alabama, Inc., since 1988. Prior to this prominent role, he spent the bulk of his career in academia as a professor and chairman of surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College with Cornell University from 1977 to 1981, and an associate professor of surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington from 1974 to 1977. He commenced his career as an assistant professor of surgery at Southwestern Medical Center with the University of Texas from 1971 to 1974.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Curreri was previously on the Medicare payment advisory committee from 1997 to 1999 and served as commissioner of the Physician Payment Review Commission from 1988 to 1997. Likewise, he served the National Institutes of Health as chairman of surgery in the anesthesiology and trauma study section from 1986 to 1988, having formerly been associated with the section from 1980 to 1984.

A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, Dr. Curreri pursued a formal education in his youth, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College in 1958 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. He completed his internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1963 and resident in surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1968. From 1968 to 1971, he served in the United States Army, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel and receiving a Meritorious Service Medal.

Dr. Curreri has maintained affiliation with several organizations to remain aware of recent developments within the industry, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, where he served as president from 1989 to 1990. Likewise, he was president of The Halsted Society from 1988 to 1989, secretary of the board of governors of the American College of Surgeons from 1987 to 1989, and president of the Society of University Surgeons from 1980 to 1981. A member of the American Burn Association, he was also a recorder for the Association for Academic Surgery.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the health care industry, Dr. Curreri has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. The recipient of the Curtis P. Artz Award from the American Trauma Society in 1989, he also received the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health in 1972. He has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
