Roberto Echandi, Global Lead of Investment Policy and Promotion at The World Bank Group, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in international trade and investments.
Drawing upon more than 25 years of professional experience, Mr. Echandi is an accomplished figure in the fields of international affairs and investment banking, having been a global lead of investment policy and promotion at The World Bank Group in Washington, DC, since 2012. Prior to this appointment, he served overseas at the University of Bern in Switzerland as a director of the program on international investment and faculty member of international law and economics at the World Trade Institute between 2010 and 2012. The former ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the European Union, and the Government of Costa Rica from 2007 to 2010, he was the chief negotiator of Costa Rice for the association agreement between the European Union and Central America in Brussels, Belgium, from 2007 to 2010, among other prominent positions. He commenced his career as an advisor in the department of international trade with the Ministry of Foreign Trade in San Jose, Costa Rica, in 1993.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Echandi pursued formal education at the INCAE Business School in Costa Rica, completing coursework in legal aspects of trade with the United States. He subsequently earned a Licenciado en Derecho Diploma from the School of Law at the University of Costa Rica in 1991. Completing additional coursework in the introduction to the United States legal system at the International Law Institute at Georgetown University and doctoral coursework at the University of Michigan Law School, he received a Master of Laws at the University of Michigan Law School in 1993. In 1995, he also obtained a Master of Philosophy in Latin American studies from St. Antony’s College at the University of Oxford in England in 1995. Concluding his education in 1996, he completed coursework in strategic negotiation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
As a testament to his professional success, Mr. Echandi was the recipient of the Mariano Montealegre Bustamante Excellence Award from the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica to the Best Ambassador of the Administration from 2006 to 2010. Likewise, he was the recipient of a fellowship from the Academia de Centroamérica. An honorary member of the Costa Rican Exporters Association, he was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
