William Jerome “Jerry” Vereen is well-known for his role as a uniform manufacturing executive, an international trade leader, and the present corporate Chief Executive Officer of Riverside Properties Holding Corp. He has been a part of the leadership of the Moultrie area for 47 years, including Riverside Manufacturing, Riverside Uniform Rentals Inc., Riverside Industries, and Moultrie Cotton Mills. Additionally, he served with the U.S. Department of State as a textile and apparel tariffs adviser, a member of the trilateral commission for apparel labeling with the North American Free Trade Agreement, and as a member for 10 years of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Born to William Coachman and Mary Elizabeth Vereen, Mr. Vereen matriculated at Georgia Institute of Technology to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to the rank of Captain from 1963 to 1967, and was decorated with the Bronze Star with the combat “V” insignia, as well as a Purple Heart. In 1963, he married Evelyn King of Cusseta, Georgia. They have one daughter, Lisa Vereen Zeanah and one son, William C. Vereen. Mr. Vereen joined Riverside Manufacturing Company in 1967, became Vice President and Director of Moultrie Cotton Mills in 1969, and served riverside Uniform Rentals as Vice President in 1971. He became Executive Vice President of Riverside Industries in 1973, and President of Riverside Manufacturing Company in 1977 concurrently with a role as CEO of the company in Ireland.
Mr. Vereen expanded his professional ambitions into Europe with Riverside Ireland, Ltd., as well as the German and U.K. branches of the company. During the ‘80s, the company organized into Riverside Industries and Riverside Manufacturing Company, with Mr. Vereen as CEO of both. In 1993 to 1994, Mr. Vereen also served as the Tyner Eminent Scholar Chair Holder Professor with the College of Human Sciences at Florida State University.
As a preeminent businessman in Moultrie, Mr. Vereen has accumulated a score of professional relationships, including as a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Power Company, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia, Gerber Scientific, Inc., Cerulean Corporation, Inc., Textile Clothing Technology Corporation (TC²), Governor’s Development Council, Georgia Department of Trade and Tourism, Georgia Research Alliance, Georgia Corporation of Industrial Development, and the southern Georgia division of Bank of America. He is past Chairman and CEO of the International Apparel Federation and the American Apparel Manufacturers Association, past Director of the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors, a life member of the Capital City Club of Atlanta, and past member of the Commerce Club of Atlanta.
In the civic sphere, he served on the Board of Directors of the Moultrie-Colquitt County United Way, the Moultrie YMCA, the Colquitt County Cancer Society, Georgia Council of Economic Education, the American Apparel Education Foundation, and the Georgia Tech School of Textile and Fiber Engineering, as well as a member of Leadership Georgia, class of ’72. Mr. Vereen is an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He volunteers on the board of Moultrie-Colquitt County Boys and Girls Club and the Moultrie Colquitt County Arts Center. Mr. Vereen also claims membership with the Sunset Country Club, past Board of Directors and Vice Chairman of the Board of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, member of Kiwanis Club, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
For leadership in the business community of Moultrie, Colquitt County and Georgia, as well as services to the apparel industry, Mr. Vereen was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, as well as the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America. He was notably featured in the 71st edition of Who’s Who in America.
