To prepare for his career, Dr. Buckner pursued formal education at Williams College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. Thereafter, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Master of Science in nuclear engineering in 1960. Dr. Buckner attributes his success to his mentor, Frank Zeni, who was the president of Waters Associates, Inc., and taught him finance and accounting operations that laid the foundation for the remainder of his career. Although he was initially interested in nuclear engineering and high altitude nuclear explosives, he later became disinterested in weapons and sought to become an executive in his own right. Since then, he has served on several local governance committees and small company boards, as well as maintained membership with Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Psi.
