With a dedication and love for hometown of Monroe, NC, Ms. Smith has dedicated her life to working as a government official for the city. During her senior year of high school in 1955, Ms. Smith had been chosen by her principal and homeroom teacher to speak to the tax collector of the city regarding an employment opportunity. The tax collector needed someone reliable and intelligent to serve as his assistant and upon speaking with Ms. Smith, he knew that she would be an exceptional employee and promptly offered her the job. She accepted, working as assistant tax collector from 1955 to 1957 before serving as assistant clerk from 1957 to 1973. Ms. Smith advanced to the role of clerk from 1973 to 1993 and during this time, she achieved certificates from both Central Piedmont Community College in 1975 and University of North Carolina in 1976. She most recently held the role of assistant manager of the City of Monroe from 1981 until her retirement in 1993.
A tenacious individual, Ms. Smith had been instrumental in obtaining the necessary funds for a city project. The project initially had been denied and though people discouraged Ms. Smith from making further attempts to seek federal funding, she redid the paperwork and submitted it for approval. Her determination and resolve to persevere resulted in federal funding for the project. Ms. Smith has considered this feat a career highlight as well as demonstrative of her love for the City of Monroe. Due to her exemplary service, Ms. Smith had been selected to receive one of the first Employee of the Year Awards from the City of Monroe. She has been presented the coveted Albert Nelson Who’s Who Achievement Award and has been featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women. Furthermore, Ms. Smith has been affiliated with Professional Secretaries International, various offices and committees within the government, the North Carolina Municipal Clerks Association, the North Carolina Personnel Directors Association and the Rotary Club. Ms. Smith married her high school sweetheart Homer Letcher Smith in 1956 and enjoyed nearly four decades of marriage until his passing in 1994. In retirement, Ms. Smith enjoys reading and the company of her son, Olin Letcher, her grandchildren Amber and Tiffany, and her five great-grandsons, Landon, Camdon, Braxton, Braydon and Jackson Reed.
