Joao Miguel Santos, FRAeS, CEng., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in aviation sales and management.
When asked of his professional success in his career, Mr. Santos credits his blend of experience, passion and the fact that he was born into the field of aviation. “My father worked in the industry and it inspired me from a young age to want to do the same,” he says, adding that he has worked hard to facilitate agreements and partnerships that have never happened before. Notably in his career, Mr. Santos was able to sell a fleet of Boeing aircraft to Bangladesh, which was the largest single capital bill in the history of the country. Additionally, he sold nine 777’s to Pakistan International Airlines, a six-and-a-half year process that became even more complex and delicate after the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01. The agreement was signed on October 30, 2002, making it the single largest tackle good bill in the history of Pakistan. In recognition of his professional excellence, Mr. Santos was the recipient of a Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Santos’ area of expertise is in the management of international commercial aviation projects. Since 2012, he has been the managing director of Sub-Saharan Africa for Boeing, a project that he has taken on in addition to his regular responsibilities as the director of international sales. In total, Mr. Santos has amassed 35 years of experience with Boeing. He has held prominent roles for the company, including regional director of airplane configuration and product development, regional director of customer requirements for the FX 767/747 program, regional director of product marketing in Asia/Pacific for the 747/767/777 program, manager of marketing requirements for the 747/767 program, manager of sales in Africa, and area manager for airline analysis in Africa and Brazil. Before joining Boeing, Mr. Santos established his career with McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Santos earned a Bachelor of Science in geological sciences and a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical and aeronautical engineering from the University of Washington in 1978. As he established himself professionally, he supplemented his work with an MBA from Pepperdine University, graduate coursework from the College of Naval Command & Staff, and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Lisbon. He has remained at the top of his field as a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. As he looks to the future, Mr. Santos intends to continue in his work while taking on new opportunities in his field as they arise.
