Ta Li, Principal at FGM Mining Consultants, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of mining and marketing.
Culminating a 50-year career in the energy and minerals field, Mr. Li began his career by venturing to Salt Lake City to explore the interesting, challenging world of mining, working at the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine for Kennecott Copper Co. He first earned a Bachelor of Science in mining engineering from Columbia University in 1970. Strong communication skills allowed him to be a valuable asset to the Engineering and Mining Journal, where he served as an associate editor from 1972 to 1974 after a serendipitous meeting with the then editor-in-chief. Thus began Mr. Li’s early career in mining journalism that helped him achieve his goal of being directly involved in mining engineering and eventually marketing. He is currently the principal of FGM Mining Consultants, in Littleton, CO, an occupation he has had since 2017. Prior to this esteemed position, Mr. Li has been a senior mining engineer at Golder Associates, a president and CEO for Anglo-Andean Explorations Inc., the director of business development for Washington Group International, , and the vice president of operations for Tetra Tech Inc., among other occupations. Mr. Li’s success in these companies accounted for over $600 million in sales to his employer.
Mr. Li has shared his knowledge with others, editing and authoring works such as “Risk Management/Assessment in Mining,” “Small Mines Development in Precious Metals,” “Mineral Resource Management by Personal Computer” and “Mineral Resources of the Pacific Rim.” Mr. Li accomplished a great deal in his professional life and considers career highlights to be the co-founding of the Denver Gold Group in 1989. That Group evolved into the premier organization for global precious metals producers, with annual meetings in Denver, Colorado and Zurich, Switzerland. Membership accounts for over 90% of world gold production. An 18-year member of the Board of Directors, he also served two terms as president during its formative years.
In 2001, as President of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME), he represent the US at Perumin in Arequipa, Peru, where he met Alejandro Toledo, the then-President of Peru, presenting him with the SME Recognition Pin of Distinction. In 2015, he was elected as an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME). He is extremely proud of this feat as it puts him in the same echelon as people he has respected greatly throughout his life. As a further testament to his success, he has served as president and chief execution officer with a number of organizations including SME, American Exploration and Mining Society and the Colorado Mining Association. Furthermore, Mr. Li has been featured in the 24th edition of Who’s Who in the West and has received awards including, but not limited to, the St. Barbara’s Award from SME, the Denver Gold Group and Colorado Mining Association in 2016. In 2019, he became the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
