Shirley Atchison Liakos, Computer Company Executive, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in computer science.
Attributing her success to being a strong female with an engineering background, Mrs. Liakos spent her career with an attitude that she could achieve anything she wanted if she worked hard. Now retired, she dedicated herself to her profession for more than 25 years. During that time, she held prominent roles including senior manager for the Computer Sciences Corporation and reference program manager for Compaq Computer Corporation. In addition, Mrs. Liakos found success in a number of roles with Digital Equipment Corporation. While there, she served as an information system program manager, a data quality manager, a data management consultant, a business operations manager, a reference architecture program manager, a standards manager, and a planning manager. Mrs. Liakos fondly recalls two career highlights, one in which she was successful in laying the structure for a reference management group within the Digital Equipment Corporation. She also is proud to have often worked closely with the president of her division of Computer Sciences Corporation as he was only two levels above her.
Mrs. Liakos’ career was supported by her education She earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Douglass College of Rutgers University in 1975. Thereafter, she enrolled in an engineering program, a field that very few women were pursuing at the time. In 1977, Mrs. Liakos earned a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Virginia. Outside of her professional work, she gave back to her industry through her work as a senior member of the Society of Women Engineers. As she looks to the future, Mrs. Liakos intends to continue enjoying her retirement by working out at the gym, traveling and spending time with family and friends and spending time visiting the beach with her family.
