Carol Swinford, Manager of the Shades of Blue Ranch, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in alternative medicine and equine therapy.
On a daily basis, Mrs. Swinford is an expert in managing a good breeding program, keeping track of all vaccinations and worming routine, and along with her husband Gary, contacting the hay suppliers and keeping track of all miniature horses that they breed. It’s a lot of work, but at the end of the day when she sees how much of a difference the Shades of Blue Ranch has positively made in so many lives, she feels rewarded. Each time her husband built a new barn, he painted it a different color of blue, which is how their organization got its name. The ranch houses 21 miniature horses, four of which visit nursing homes. The remaining horses are breeding mares. The horses also perform in memorial services and various events.
In 1997, after working for numerous nursing homes and being an activity director, Mrs. Swinford told her husband that she going to ask the nursing home if she could bring one of her miniature horses there as a source of comfort and therapy. She has been taking her horses to numerous nursing home ever since. She became a certified nurse’s aide through McHenry County College and has worked at the Easter Seal Therapy Center for Physically and Mentally Challenged Children, the Valley High Nursing Home, the Carostoel Nursing Home and the Pioneer Center Training Center for Mentally Challenged Adults. In 2018, Mrs. Swinford received the Excellence in Leadership and Ever Present Dedication Award from the Heart of American Miniature Equine Club.
