Mr. Rutherford became involved in his profession due to helping out at his family business at just 7 years old. Throughout the years, he took on more and more responsibilities and by the time he was 10 he was handling the cash receipts, making out the bank statements and going to the bank and making deposits. When he was old enough to drive he would buy merchandise for the store in Portland. In the summer, he would open the stores for the family and operate the individual stores. With his years of experience in business, he originally intended on going to school for it, but when he enrolled at the University of Oregon, the program had changed and he felt a calling to go into history and economics. From there, Mr. Rutherford felt the profession of law was within his reach, and he earned a LLB from Harvard University in 1964. Mr. Rutherford then spent several years is the US Army and with the Reserves as a First Lieutenant.
Upon serving two tours of active duty in Germany, Mr. Rutherford returned to Oregon and began practicing law at an insurance defense firm, Maguire, Kester & Cosgrave. Throughout the next decade, he worked as a house counsel at May & Co., as well as for a private practice, and then became a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from 1977 to 1984. Throughout most of his career, he continued to manage the family business and grow it substantially. Under his direction, the store grew to 13 locations. Mr. Rutherford has also served as the state treasurer of Oregon, the chairman of the Oregon Investment Council, the executive vice president and director of US and Australian operations for ABD International and the present of the Societe General Touche Remnant. From 1994 to 1995, he served as the director of special projects for the New York-based Metallgesellschaft Corp. Since 1994, he has been the principal of his own firm, Rutherford Investment Management LLC. From 1995 to 1996, he provided his skills and services as the managing director of Macadam Capital Partners and in 1997 was the CEO of the Fiberboard Asbestos Compensation Trust.
In 2006, Mr. Rutherford published “Who Shot Goldilocks?” In 1981, he earned the Contribution to Individual Freedom Award from the ACLU. In his career, Mr. Rutherford has maintained professional affiliation with the National Association of State Treasurers and the National Association of State Auditors. While his career has taken him in so many different directions among business and legal positions, he has found all of his work to be incredibly rewarding.
