Mr. Davis became involved in his profession when he was very young. In his neighborhood, there was a man provided financial advice to community members. Mr. Davis worked for him and saw the profound effect of his work had on the community. Mr. Davis started as a clerk in his office preparing taxes. This man advised him to go to school and major in accounting. Mr. Davis followed his mentor’s advice and decided to major in financial planning, as it would allow him to reach more people in the community.

In his academic pursuits, Mr. Davis earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Southeastern University. After graduating with his master’s degree in 1960, he became certified in financial planning at the College for Financial Planning in Denver. He is also licensed as a certified planner with the Board of Standards. Since 1978, he has served as an independent financial planner. Furthermore, Mr. Davis worked as an enrolled agent in the IRS. On top of these endeavors, Mr. Davis worked as the chair of the Association of African American Financial Advisors. Upon his retirement from the position, he attained the rank of chair emeritus. Mr. Davis has also prepared future generations of financial professionals at Howard University as an adjunct professor and lecturer. He has hosted financial service television programs with Common Cents for the Howard University station WHHM.

Throughout his career, Mr. Davis maintained professional affiliation with the International Association for Financial Planning and the Association for African American Financial Advisors. His achievements include being the first African American CFP. Mr. Davis has also received a number of accolades and awards for his work. These accolades include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Financial Planning Association, the Trailblazer Award from the AAAA and the Service Award for Blazing New Trails in Economics from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. In 1987, he was nominated among Money Magazine’s Nation’s Best Certified Financial Planners. In 2018, he received the Eagle Award from the Society for Education and Professional Development and the Inaugural Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from Investment News.
