Daniel Duncan has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in labor union administration.

Mr. Duncan received his first union card in 1973 working at a Kroger market in Tennessee. He soon found that that this opportunity helped him save the money to put himself through college. Coupled with his parents’ teachings on the importance of helping others, Mr. Duncan earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee in 1978 and soon entered the workforce yearning to make a difference. With more than four decades of service, Mr. Duncan has received such accolades as Young Democrat of the Year from the Young Democrats of Broward County, the Washington-Baltimore News Guild Herbert Block Award and the 11th Congressional District Democrats John Sturdivant Award.

In 2011, Mr. Duncan was elected Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO, where he had been working as the department’s administrator since 2000. Prior to working at the MTD, he served in various positions with the Seafarers International Union starting in 1987 and culminating as its Communications Director. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he was the director of its Senior AIDES Title V Employment Program between 1983 and 1986. Earlier in his career, he was a reporter for newspapers in south Florida and middle Tennessee. He also served as the chairman of the South Florida Title V Directors. He has been a member of Lions International since 1980.

Mr. Duncan considers being accepted by his brothers and sisters in labor to lead and reorganize their labor council in Northern Virginia to make it one of the most effective “get out to vote” organizations in the state and in the labor movement. They started with nothing and grew to have all types of volunteers come in to participate. In addition to this work, he has maintained affiliation with such organizations like the North Florida Community Services Union Counselor Association, the North Florida Coalition of Black Trade unionists, the Washington Propeller Club and various other groups.
