Karen E. Gonnerman, Medical Management Consultant at Disability Management Network, Ltd., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Nurses for dedication, achievements, and leadership in occupational health.

Ms. Gonnerman was an only child and she can remember always wanting to be a nurse. She enjoys working with people and being able to help them. It has been very rewarding meeting people and helping people who really need help. Her family was her top priority, which included church and friends. Ms. Gonnerman started on her professional journey by earning a diploma in nursing from the Swedish American Hospital School of Nursing in 1964. Then she became a registered nurse in the state of Illinois and became a certified occupational health nurse specialist.

Ms. Gonnerman was hired to develop a department that was concentrated on the working force because they did not have anything like that at the clinic and they were the only clinic in town. She went out to all the factories, businesses and schools to gain a following. Ms. Gonnerman started with no clients and by the time she retired, she had 250 clients. Ms. Gonnerman’s career revolved around health care, she started as a staff nurse of general surgery at Streator Municipal Hospital in 1964. After a year, she moved on to become an assistant head nurse at Lutheran General Hospital, where she remained until 1966. In the years following, she held multiple jobs as an office nurse before becoming an occupational health nurse in 1980 at the Thermos Co. From there, she moved on to Zedco, Inc., where she held the same position. At the time of her retirement in 2016, she was a medical management consultant at the Disability Management Network, Ltd. since 1995. As a testament to her success, Ms. Gonnerman has been inducted as a member of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, the Northern Illinois Association of Occupational Health Nurses and the Freeport Chamber of Commerce.
