William Lloyd Garrison, retired cemetery executive and social worker formerly of the Lake View Cemetery Association, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social work.
“Always take risks and try new things, but don’t take life – or yourself – too seriously,” says Mr. Garrison, who has been successful in his career by following this mantra. By demonstrating his persistent work ethic and humility, he was able to make a difference in the lives of others as a social worker and cemetery executive during his 43-year career. Now retired, he spent more than two decades working for the Lake View Cemetery Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, where he held numerous roles including secretary, vice president and president. He came to the association after finding success in such roles as executive director for the Cleveland Eye Bank, executive director for the Cleland Society for the Blind, psychiatric social worker for Bellefair JCB, social worker for the department of psychiatry at the University of Florida, and social worker for the Florida Boys School, among many others. He has contributed to his industry through multiple career-related programs and initiatives outside of his full-time work. Notably, Mr. Garrison was the director of the International Cemetery and Funeral Association (now the International Cemetery, cremation & Funeral Association). With this organization, he has worked on many committees over the years, including the historical cemetery advisory committee, the strategic planning committee, and the membership committee. He was also president of the Ohio Association of Cemetery Superintendents and Officials and president of the Greater Cleveland Cemetery Association. Mr. Garrison’s success is a product of his experience and his education. He holds a Master of Science in management from Case Western Reserve University, a Master of Social Work from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. He is a certified cemetery executive and an accredited personnel manager. Also, Mr. Garrison is distinguished by the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers.
Mr. Garrison is regarded for always wanting to help others, both professionally and personally. Outside of his professional work, he has been known for participating in civic projects. Today, he is the trustee of “Rebuilding Together,” in Northeast Ohio, member of the national religious relationship committee and central region board for the Boy Scouts of America, and founder and trustee of the East Cleveland Township Cemetery Foundation. Previously, he co-founded the Greater Cleveland Scouting Foundation and served as a member of many organizations, including the East Cleveland Parks Association, the task force on national cub scout character connections of the Boy Scouts of America, the Center for Families and Children, the Alta House, the Cuyahoga County Reach Out Counseling Services, the agricultural business advisory committee of the Cleveland Municipal Schools, and many others. In recognition of his excellence, Mr. Garrison was the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, a Lifetime Humanitarian Award from the Rotary Club of Cleveland, a Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America, a Cliff Dochterman Rotary and Scouting Service Award, the Whitney M. Young Award, and an honorable mention for the Northern Ohio LIVE Achievement Award. Looking ahead, Mr. Garrison intends to continue in his civic work while seeking new opportunities to give back and help others.
