John Joseph Buckley Jr., Professor of the Practice at Texas A&M School of Public Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business and medical education.
Always interested in medicine, Mr. Buckley wanted a career where he could combine that inclination with his other passion for business. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kenyon College in 1966 and an MBA from The George Washington University in 1969. He worked in Phoenix, Arizona, as an assistant administrator for Maricopa County General Hospital from 1969 to 1971 before working the same position at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center from 1971 to 1974. He then advanced to associate administrator and vice president. Mr. Buckley then moved on to become the president of St. Anthony’s Hospital, Amarillo, returning to St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in 1984 as president and CEO.
Among all his accomplishments, Mr. Buckley considers becoming the CEO of St. Antony’s Hospital at the age of 34 to be his greatest. He later worked as the senior vice president of Mercy Health System in Cincinnati from 1988 to 1991, president of Southern Illinois Healthcare Enterprises in Carbondale, Illinois, from 1992 to 2001, interim president and CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital of East St. Louis, Illinois, in 2002, Interim COO of the St. Joseph Campus of Via Christi Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas in 2003, and interim CEO of the St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas, from 2003 to 2004. From 2004 through 2008, he served as president and CEO of St. Joseph Regional Health Center and St. Joseph Health System in Bryan, Texas. Presently, Mr. Buckley serves as the executive-in-residence (Professor of Practice) for the Master of Health Administration program of the Texas A&M University School of Public Health.
Mr. Buckley currently teaches a professional development seminar, health systems leadership course, a practical course for residential master’s level students, and co-teaches a course on the business of health. He enjoys helping his students prepare for their careers and is glad to be able to share his knowledge with others. In addition to these responsibilities, he has been active with a number of community agencies over the years. Furthermore, he holds a membership with the Medical Group Management Association, Healthcare Financial Management Association, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Texas Association Voluntary Hospital, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Currently, Mr. Buckley is the chair of the board of the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley.
In recognition of his success, Mr. Buckley has received numerous awards and has been featured in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, the third edition of Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, and multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
