Phillip Oppedahl, President and Chief Executive Officer at American Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a military officer and business administrator.

As a young boy, he grew up on a farm, and always knew he wanted to fly planes. He decided that the navy would be the perfect place to gain flight experience, and while he was in the navy, he chose to pursue nuclear physics. He earned a Bachelor of Science in naval science from the Navy Postgraduate School in 1963, and in 1971 he earned a Master of Science in nuclear physics. Mr. Oppedahl was commissioned as an ensign in 1956, and in 1965, he became an assistant navigator on the USS Coral Sea. In 1967, he served as a basic jet flight instructor. He served as test group director for the Defense Nuclear Agency, then as a weapons officer on the USS Oriskany. He rose to the rank of captain in 1977, and started working in program management for armament at the Naval Air Systems Command. In 1978, he earned a Master of Science in systems management from the University of Southern California, and acted as the test director of the Defense Nuclear Agency from 1979 to 1982.

Mr. Oppedahl closed his military career as deputy commander of the defense nuclear agency in 1983, and for his extensive service, he was recognized with the Decorated Defense Superior Service Medal. Since 1983, Mr. Oppedahl has acted as the president and chief executive officer of American Systems, and recently, he was the recipient of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in 2016. He authored “Energy Loss of High Energy Electrons in Beryllium” in 1971, and “Understanding Contractor Motivation and Incentive Contracts” in 1977. He is a member of the Naval Institute, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Association of Naval Aviation, Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Navy League. For his excellence and success as a military officer and administrator, Mr. Oppedahl has been included in the first edition of Who’s Who in Media and Communication, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
