James D. Dougherty has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executive for dedication, achievements, and leadership in business.
An executive attorney who possesses expertise in law and business, Mr. Dougherty demonstrates a well-rounded skill set and discipline that has brought him much success throughout his career. He was inspired to enter this profession under the influence of his father, who was a successful attorney in Long Island, New York, during the Great Depression. Before establishing his own legacy in the field of law, Mr. Dougherty served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant for the American Embassy in London, England from 1958 to 1960. Decades later, after establishing industry-leading expertise in the business and law, he would return to serving his country as an International Corps volunteer in Siberia, Layuia and Cai.
Mr. Dougherty holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College, an LLB from Columbia University and an AMP from Harvard Business School. In his career, he held many noteworthy positions with the Supermarkets General Corporation, known today as Pathmark Stores, Inc., one of the top ten grocery store chains in the United States. Mr. Dougherty found success with the company as its president for two years, executive vice president for four years, senior vice president for two years and vice president. He came to the company early on in his career as its associate general counsel in 1971. In addition to his full-time work, Mr. Dougherty contributed to his industry through his memberships with the American Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association. Although now retired, Mr. Dougherty continues to impact those around him through his work as a supervisor of the Town of Shelter Island. Looking ahead, he intends to continue taking on passion projects in his free time.
