Madison Smith, Senior Vice President at JESCO Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of contracting and construction.
Mr. Smith grew up in a family-owned mechanical contracting firm in Florida and studied aerospace engineering at Auburn University. After earning a Bachelor of Science in 1972, he found there were not many available positions in aircraft development, so he decided to pursue a career in construction. He started as an assistant project manager at JESCO Inc. in 1976, and over the years, he rose through the ranks with the company. Mr. Smith became project manager, then manager of estimating, vice president of estimating, vice president, and currently serves as senior vice president of the Mechanical & Electrical Process Division at JESCO Inc.
Over the course of his more than 40 years in the industry, Mr. Smith has amassed a myriad professional certifications in his field. He holds a Master Plumbing License in seven states, a Master Mechanical License in eight states, and a Master Gasfitter License in three states. In addition, he holds a Master Boiler Contractor License in three states, and a Master Electrical License in Mississippi—in total, Mr. Smith holds 27 different licenses and certifications. He believes that a firm background of education is vital to success, and advises aspiring construction professionals to be open to challenges and learning opportunities.
In addition to his own father, Mr. Smith cites Joe Staub, the founder of JESCO Inc., as a mentor in his career. Mr. Staub’s son, Travis, counseled Mr. Smith to always do the right thing and aim to keep the customer happy. Mr. Smith believes in the importance of forming lasting friendships with business associates, as establishing a strong relationship creates trust, and trust means that others will have his back. He believes in being impeccable with his word and his commitments, as reputation is more important than any financial consequence.
Mr. Smith recalls working on the first major project for the Mechanical-Electrical Division at JESCO Inc., and working with the Mercury Division of Blount Constructors to build a microelectronics production facility for Martin-Marietta. He designed and assisted in the construction of the Nissan North America Lithium-Ion Battery Plant, as well as a Nissan automobile assembly facility in Mexico. More recently, Mr. Smith has been involved in the design and construction of the gigafactory for Tesla. In addition to his professional pursuits, he is a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors of America, the American Society of Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, and serves as an electrical representative to the Mississippi Board of Contractors.
