William Clayton, Retired Utilities Executive, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.

Mr. Clayton entered the field after reading about an effort to make a tunnel from Alaska to Russia and thinking that it sounded like an operation that he would love to be in charge of. He pursued an education at the University of Houston and earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1950. Shortly after, he completed military service with the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, serving in Korea.

Mr. Clayton entered the field through various engineering positions at Entex, Incorporated from 1950 to 1968. He would remain with the company for the entirety of his career, serving in the positions of an assistant chief engineer, a chief engineer, the vice president of administration, and the vice president of engineering, operations, and administration from 1968 to 1985. Mr. Clayton spent the two years afterward working as the vice president of engineering, operations, and data processing before being promoted to the position of the senior vice president of engineering, operations, and data processing in 1987. He retired in 1992.

Over an impressive career, Mr. Clayton was inspired by a number of fantastic people who brought out the best in him. Bill Ross, C.L. Woody, and C.C. Mceachern were very straight forward and upright people who were experts in their field and willing to impart their knowledge to Mr. Clayton. He credits the highlight of his career as being recognized by his peers in the American Gas Association for his leadership abilities, which in turn led to his leadership position that he held for ten years. Mr. Clayton has served as a valuable member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Houston Engineering and Science Society, the Houston Engineering and Science Society, and the Southern Gas Association, among others. As a testament to his success, he has been featured in the 24th edition of Who’s Who In Finance and Industry and multiple editions of Who’s Who in America.
