Ms. Barnett became involved in her profession simply because she wanted to make a difference. Early in her life, she had many mentors. She looked up to her Girl Scout leaders, Phyllis and Jim Walch—their guidance meant a lot to her. They taught her about leadership and helped her develop as a person. During her college years, Elizabeth McDow, who was a professional girl scout, encouraged Ms. Barnett in her career development and taught her about leadership, management and working with staff. While working at AT&T, Stephen Kirkmeier was an excellent leader and manager. He instilled the importance of teamwork and development, as well as creating team-related goals, and was a key mentor for Ms. Barnett. In preparation for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Auburn University in 1980 and an MBA from Emory University in 1982. Continuing with her studies, Ms. Barnett took postgraduate coursework at Duke University in 1991 and at the University of Michigan in 1993.

After about a decade of working as the owner of Dot-Dot.com, Ms. Barnett had many successful customers, including organizations like the White House Association. She began to notice how her dream and hard work had created the reality she desired—not to mention that her successful customers were becoming even more successful. While working with the White House Association, Ms. Barnett had the opportunity to communicate the history of the White House through educational resources for teachers, leaders and students. The ability to support her clients and help them achieve their goals also helped Ms. Barnett achieve her goal of wanting to make a difference. In 1982, Ms. Barnett began her professional career at Southern Bell as an account executive. A year later, she joined Southern Bell Advanced Systems as a sales manager. In 1984, Ms. Barnett took the position of assistant product manager at Bell South Services, and rose to the rank of product manager and consultant in 1985, which she held until 1994. In 1995, she took a position at A&A Consultant Services for a year, before becoming a senior product manager and webmaster at Telemate Software. In 1997, Ms. Barnett became the president and owner of Dot-Dot.com, where she presently still works.

As a testament to her success, Ms. Barnett received the Bell South Eagle Award for outstanding career achievement, an Appreciation Award for being a Girl Scouts volunteer, and the First Class Scout Award from the Girl Scouts of the United States of America.
