Edward Mitchell, Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Potomac Electric Power Company, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of engineering and business administration.

Prior to pursuing his higher education, Mr. Mitchell served in the United States Navy. He enlisted in 1950 and received an honorable discharge in 1952. Returning home, he decided to apply his talent for mathematics and studied at the University of Virginia, where he earned a BEE in 1956. He started working for the Potomac Electric Power Company, and continued his education at George Washington University, earning an MEA in 1960. From 1963 to 1966, Mr. Mitchell served on the Vienna Town Council in Virginia, acting as a member of the Vienna Planning and Zoning Commission.

Mr. Mitchell continued to work at the Potomac Electric Power Company, and in 1971, rose to the rank of vice president of electrical engineering. Continuing to rise through the company, he became the senior vice president of system engineering and operations in 1976, and in 1980, he rose to the rank of executive vice president and chief operating officer, which he held until 1983. During his lengthy career with the company, Mr. Mitchell held the roles of director and president, and since 1989, he has served in the position of chief executive officer. From 1993 to 1996, he simultaneously acted as chairman of the company.

As a registered professional engineer in the District of Columbia, Mr. Mitchell served on the board of visitors to the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering. He is an active member of the Maryland Business Council, the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade, and the board of directors for the National Rehabilitation Hospital. As a testament to his success and experience as an engineering administrator, Mr. Mitchell has been featured in the first edition of Who’s Who in America: Student Version, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and Who’s Who in America.
