With over 60 years of professional experience in the field, Mr. Schurz achieved great success in the fields of advertising and journalism. He pursued an education at Denison University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. He then began his career as an assistant instructor at the University of Maryland before spending the next two years serving in the United States Army, from 1958 to 1960. Having completed service, Mr. Schurz worked as an administrative assistant at the South Bend Tribune from 1960 to 1966. Afterward, he contributed to the Imperial Valley Press as a circulation consultant.
Additionally, Mr. Schurz acted as the chairman of Hoosier Times Inc. and as the director and vice chairman of Schurz Communications. Currently, he serves the latter company as a chairman and publisher. Outside of his primary professional responsibilities, Mr. Schurz served on the board of directors for United Way of Monroe County and on the Community Foundation Area Arts Council. He has been a member of several professional organizations, including the Indiana University Foundation, the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, the International Press Institute, and the Inter-American Press Association, of which he was made an honorary lifetime president.
Notably, Mr. Schurz was awarded an honorary degree from Indiana University in 2000 and has traveled to over 100 countries over the course of his career. He attributes his great success to having a good education and the ability to listen, and finds being surrounded by good people to be the most rewarding part of his career. As a testament to his success, Mr. Schurz has been featured in the 23rd and 26th editions of Who’s Who in the World, as well as in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in America.
