Ms. Sidener has established an accomplished career as a nonprofit executive, with more than 30 years of experience working to promote healthy lungs and clean air in her community. Since 2006, she has worked as the president and chief executive officer of Breathe California of the Bay Area, and since 1988, she has held the position of the executive director of the American Lung Association Santa Clara—San Benito Counties. As a certified health education specialist and teacher in New York State, Ms. Sidener garnered experience as a substitute teacher for the Monahasen High/Junior High School from 1978 to 1979, and started as a program coordinator for the American Lung Association Santa Clara—San Benito Counties in 1982. She rose to the rank of a director of programs in 1984 and acting executive director in 1987, before accepting her permanent position. From 1986 to 2005, she additionally served as a national clinic leader trainer for the American Lung Association of New York.
In preparation for her professional pursuits, Ms. Sidener attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971, and continued her education at Russell Sage College, where she earned a Master of Science in 1979. She has served as a member of numerous community boards and civic initiatives, and additionally shared her expertise through her written work. In 1983, Ms. Sidener authored the “Camp Superstuff Workbook and Teachers Manual,” and has contributed myriad articles to professional publications and magazines. She is a member of multiple organizations related to her field, including the American Public Health Association, the California Council of Executives, the American Lung Association, the San Jose Rotary Club and the Association of United Way Agencies, among others. Ms. Sidener has additionally been recognized with the California Wellness Foundation Sabbatical Award in 2008, was listed as one of the SV Business Journal’s Top 100 Women of Influence in Silicon Valley in 2009 and was named a woman of distinction by Alpha Xi Delta in 1999.
