Location: Wallingford, Connecticut, United States

Karen A. Grava, Public Relations Executive, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of public relations.

Ms. Grava never knew how much she would love public relations. During her time as an undergraduate student at the University of Connecticut, she worked on the school newspaper. She loved it, which encouraged her to pursue journalism. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English, she went on to work as an editor for various newspapers from 1973 until 1979. However, she knew she had to take a step back when she began longing to be a reporter instead of an editor. It was then that she began wondering what was next for her, and she decided to explore public relations. She entered the industry as the director of the public relations division for the University of Connecticut. She acted in that position until 1993, and later, in 1999, she moved on to become the assistant vice president for public relations. In 2005, she became the director of administrative public relations. Ms. Grava stepped down in 2009, though she still contributes to the University of Connecticut as the manager of media communications. Ms. Grava proceeded to work at the University of New Haven from 2011 until 2018 when she formally retired. However, she continues to fulfill some consulting needs in the industry at her leisure.

Ms. Grava has been a member of several organizations affiliated with the public relations industry throughout her career, some of which include the Public Relations Society of America, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the National Public Service Committee. The latter organization presented her with the Public Service Award in 1998, which is just one award among the many that Ms. Grava has received. Her other honors include the Exceptional Achievement Award from CASE for University Chronicle in Washington in 1984, and three Bronze Medal Awards from the University of Connecticut Journal in 1988, 1989, and 1990. Ms. Grava continues to uphold the ethical standards of public relations and never forgets the importance of representing her organization positively. In 2019, she was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her professional success.
