H. Donald Winkler, Author, Public Relations Educator and Executive, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of public relations.
During Mr. Winkler’s 38-year career as a university public relations executive, he became one of the leading professionals in his field. In high school, he volunteered to edit for his school newspaper and enjoyed it so much that he decided to pursue journalism. After earning a master’s in journalism and government from Ohio University in 1956, he navigated his way through the world of a professional journalist. Despite his success, he eventually felt a calling toward working for universities and colleges. He was attracted to their variety of opportunity. In 1966, he accepted a position as director of public relations for George Washington University. He went on to work for various other universities, such as California State University. His success resulted in him eventually being made associate vice president of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. He stayed with the university until 1995 when he retired.
In addition to his primary pursuits, Mr. Winkler is an accomplished author. He fondly refers to his writing as his second career because it came to fruition after his retirement. Some of his notable titles are “Lincoln’s Ladies” and “Civil War Goats and Scapegoats,” published in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Additionally, Mr. Winkler’s writing skills have assisted him in contributing numerous articles to professional journals. Throughout his career, he has received over 80 national awards from numerous promotional publications. One of his most appreciated honors was being inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame in 1995, as he is the only person from his profession to ever be chosen. In 2019, Mr. Winkler received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his success.
