Joseph Duffey, Academic Administrator with Sylvan Learning, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership.

With 60 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Duffey currently contributes his expertise as a senior executive and the chairman of the International University Project with Sylvan Learning Systems in Washington, D.C, a position he has held since 1999. He previously worked as the director of the U.S. Information Agency from 1993 to 1998, president of American University from 1991 to 1993, president of the University of Massachusetts from 1990 to 1991 and chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst for nearly a decade. Dr. Duffey served as the chairman of the National Endowment of the Humanities from 1978 to 1981, and garnered additional experience as an educator with Yale University, Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Center for Urban Studies and the Hartford Seminary.

In preparation for his career pursuits, Dr. Duffey began his higher education at Marshall University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1954, and received a Bachelor of Divinity from the Andover Newton Theological School in 1957. In 1959, he graduated with an STM at Yale University, and in 1970 he concluded his education at the Hartford Seminary with a PhD. Alongside his primary academic degrees, he has also been the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates from a variety of institutions, including Ritsuimaneu University, Monmouth College, Dickinson College, Gonzaga University, Centre College and the City University of New York.

Dr. Duffey has served as a senior presidential appointee under three former U.S. Presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. He has published widely on themes of higher education and social and economic issues and has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1979. He has also contributed to the C-SPAN Video Library as a speaker in more than 20 videos since 1999. Dr. Duffey was named Commander of the Order of the Crown by the King of Belgium and received a Tree of Life Award from the National Jewish Fund in 1987. As an additional testament to his success, stature, and experience, he has been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
