Title: Executive Director
Company: Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board
Location: Lincoln, Nebraska, United States
Nathaniel Blum, Executive Director at Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in farming and agriculture.
Starting a family early in life, Mr. Blum took a job in healthcare as a means to provide stability and financial security. While working overnight shifts in an Emergency Room as a technician, he pursued an Associate of Arts degree at Southeast Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Following graduation in 2009, Mr. Blum accepted a position as a Financial Advisor at Thrivent Financial, earning his Series 7, Series 66 and Life and Health certifications. Though he was successful in this career, Mr. Blum did not feel passionately about the work.
Mr. Blum spent time volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association as an Advocate to the Nebraska Congressional Delegation while serving as a Financial Advisor. This experience took him to Washington D.C. where he built a professional relationship with the Member representing Nebraska’s First Congressional District. This relationship resulted in a position on the congressman’s staff in Lincoln, ultimately leading to Blum’s role as the Director of Agriculture Policy and Outreach.
Following his father’s unexpected death in 2015, Mr. Blum assumed responsibility for the family’s fourth generation family farm. With a rekindled passion for Agriculture, Mr. Blum applied for, and became a member of, the Nebraska LEAD Program. He completed the program in 2018 and now serves as the Vice President of the Nebraska LEAD Alumni Association.
Through study of modern American agriculture, Mr. Blum identified both strengths and weaknesses in the commodity marketing model which is widely employed in the industry. Always a passionate problem-solver, he began to actively seek a role with a more robust and direct impact on farm profitability and rural economic prosperity. In 2019, Mr. Blum accepted the role of Executive Director of the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board. His work there has focused on economic and ecological sustainability in agriculture, and the revitalization of the sorghum industry domestically and abroad. Most notably in his first year with the organization, Mr. Blum participated in trade discussions in Hanoi Vietnam. Alongside partners at the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the US Grains Council, and the Foreign Ag Service, the delegation was eventually successful in reaching an agreement on a revised phytosanitary standard for sorghum, resulting in the reopening of the Vietnam market to US Sorghum imports.
Mr. Blum continues to seek opportunities for personal and professional growth. He began pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2017 and anticipates completing this degree in the near future. Mr. Blum is highly motivated in identifying and solving large-scale problems and in seeking opportunities for continued learning and growth.
Mr. Blum continues to find ways to be of service and make the world a better place than he has found it. He finds joy in raising his family and mentoring young people to encourage future generations of leaders. He hopes one day to serve his community and country in public office.
