Gerald Neil Smith, Chief Executive Officer at GNS Media LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in media.
Mr. Smith became involved in his profession because when he went to school, he wanted to go to law and be in politics. His father told him that if you have the ability, then you pay back society for what he earned from their investment in you. Once he started he realized, he was better at numbers and though he would rather pursue an accounting line of business. Mr. Smith took a job with a corporate group and was exposed to different things. He just happened to be sent to a job and it was a lucky break for him to get into broadcasting. Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Clemson University in 1975.
Mr. Smith’s career highlight that stood out the most was going on the board of Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), which is a company that represents songwriters and copyright royalties. He has been on the board since 1995 and it is more of national recognition. The company he works for owns part of BMI. Mr. Smith began his career as an internal auditor for Liberty Life Insurance Co. in 1975, staying with the company until 1977. He then became a chief accountant for Liberty Properties, Inc. from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, he became a senior auditor for a year and tax manager until 1982 for The Liberty Corp. He joined broadcasting in 1982 becoming an assistant controller of the Cosmos Broadcasting Corp., moving up to controller in 1986 and remaining in that role until 2000. He was also the vice president of finance from 1992 to 2000. For the next year, he was the vice president of administration for Liberty Corporation and in 2002, he became the chief operating officer for Cable Vantage Incorporated, until 2003. Since 2033, Mr. Smith has been the chief executive officer of GNS Media LLC.
Alongside his career, Mr. Smith made sure to give back to his community. He was the president of Liberty Recreation Association, councilman, chairman and vice chairman of Pickens County Council, vice chairman on Appalachian Council of Government and chairman and board member of Canon Memorial Hospital. As a testament to his success, Mr. Smith was named Civic leader of the Year in 1985, Member of the Year in 1984, and received the Recipient Top Sales Award from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce in 1984. He was also listed in 2nd and 3rd editions of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 25th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
