Richard “Rick” Howes, President and Chief Executive Officer at Dundee Precious Metals, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mining engineering.
Coming from a family of numerous engineers, Mr. Howes’ interest in the field was piqued from a young age and he soon became inspired to learn more about advanced engineering. From his research, Mr. Howes found himself guided to the mining industry, and he has since spent the majority of his professional career in Canadian mining. Upon receiving a BS in mining engineering from Queens University in Ontario, Mr. Howes now notably serves as the president and chief executive officer of Dundee Precious Metals. In his role since 2009, he leads an international company whose focuses include smelting and mining for gold and copper – he also develops the strategy for the company as a whole and serves as the head spokesperson. Mr. Howes attributes the success of his career to his ability to be innovative, as well as his passion for learning and leading.
In his executive role, Mr. Howes finds great reward in seeing opportunities and contributing to making the industry more sustainable, efficient and safer. He hopes the field can adopt advancements in digital technologies to make operations more automated, and therefore safer, and more attractive to the new generation coming into the industry. In five years’ time, he hopes these plans can be initiated, and he plans to leave a strong legacy for future minds and leaders as they push for greater innovation. Mr. Howes is a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Professional Engineers Society, as well as internal company boards. In his free time, he enjoys mentoring young graduates and students entering the field, as well as golf, water sports, reading and playing chess.
