John Joseph Riedl, Former Vice President of West Coast Sales at Metro Network, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in advertising.
Mr. Riedl had always wished to attend a business school, but once he commenced his studies, he decided that the arena of marketing sales was the perfect realm for his personality and skillsets. In 1965, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Bowling Green State University and set off on his journey to interview with ad agencies. Now backed by more than 40 years of professional work in the industry, Mr. Riedl most recently served as the 10-year vice president of west coast sales for Metro Network, a broadcasting outsourcing company, from 1996 to 2006.
Mr. Riedl commenced his career as a media buyer and planner for Leo Burnett Advertising in Chicago from 1965 to 1968, moving up to assistant account executive in 1968. At the recommendation of a friend, Mr. Riedl interviewed with Station WLS-TV in Chicago and, following an exceptional pitch, he was hired. He performed work as an account executive from 1968 to 1973. For one year, in 1973, he was account executive of commercial television sales for ABC in New York City, and for the next 10 years, he served Station KABC-TV in Los Angeles as a national sales manager, as well as general sales manager from 1984 to 1996. In a lively field such as advertising, Mr. Riedl had the good fortune to work with and manage various events, including several Super Bowls, NBA finals, NHL finals, a World Series, and the 1984 Olympics, which he remembers as the highlight of his career.
The advice Mr. Riedl can pass on to those looking to break into the advertising industry is to fully understand the way the business operates and learn how to work with all types of personalities. He advises, if you are an introverted person, you do not want sales, but if you are outgoing and enjoy being around people, it would be a good fit. Mr. Riedl has sat on the board of the Eagles Knolls Association since 2017, previously serving as president from 2003 to 2017, and was the president of his homeowners’ association at his Big Bear Lake, California residency for 14 years. An active member of the Television Advertising Bureau and Phi Kappa Alpha, where he served two terms as the president. He sits on the foundation board and advisory board for Bowling Green State University. He notably provided a very generous lead gift to the university in recent years by making a $1 million commitment toward the Changing Lives for the World campaign. This donation influenced a variety of areas on campus, including student scholarships, the library, athletics, and capital projects for the college of business administration and the school of media and communication. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Riedl can be found in the 52nd and 53rd editions of Who’s Who in America and the first edition of Who’s Who in Entertainment.
