Mr. Deskovic faced life in prison and served 16 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit, and was eventually proven innocent by DNA analysis. Angry and disappointed in the American justice system, in 2009, he spearheaded his foundation, the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice, in New York as founder, president and an advocate. The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation is a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to the exoneration of the wrongfully convicted, their recovery and reform of the justice system. With approximately 120,000 wrongfully convicted people in U.S. prisons today, according to the foundation, Mr. Deskovic is proud to have personally helped seven wrongfully convicted citizens and helped pass three laws aimed at reform.
Along with backing his foundation’s mission each day, Mr. Deskovic’s body of works consists of delivering more than 200 presentations nationally and internationally, authoring various articles and being published in nine publications, countless media interviews and creating the documentary video, “Conviction.” He is an officer of Justice Impacted Bar Association, a global advisory councilman for Restorative Justice International and an advisory board member of the coalition group, It Can Happen To You. Additionally, Mr. Deskovic is co-owner of the Recharge Beyond the Bar Entry Game which facilitates the formerly incarcerated connecting with their friends and family.
Mr. Deskovic received as Associate of Arts from Corning Community College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in behavioral science from Mercy College. Continuing his educational path, in 2013, he achieved a Master of Art in law and policy and criminal justice from the City University of New York John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In 2019, he notably obtained the highest level of educational prowess with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in criminal justice from the Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University. Prior to spearheading his foundation, Mr. Deskovic worked as a columnist and reporter for the Westchester Guardian from 2006 to 2011. With his journalistic background, he is certified in the Reid Technique of Investigative Interviewing.
For Mr. Deskovic’s unmatched success in his courageous work, in 2015, he was the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce. In 2018, he found success obtaining the Agent of Change Award from the Hudson Valley Re-Entry Network, as well as the Distinguished Alum Award from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In addition to these accolades, Mr. Deskovic has also won a New Yorker of the Week Award, Sobie Pesternack Award and Conquest Award. With his illustrious career success, the activist and lawyer attributes his grand reputation to a strong desire to make a difference. Looking toward the future, Mr. Deskovic plans to have his organization have chapters in other states, to work with more nonprofits and possibly seek political office as district attorney. As long as he is in the industry, Mr. Deskovic will never stop seeking justice for those wrongfully convicted and work to pass and reform laws in order to protect the innocent.
