Mike Cherry, Founder and President at Matterhorn Energy, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering.
With a demonstrated history working in the E&P industry, Mr. Cherry notably navigates companies to industry-leading production results through keen analytical, operational and technical expertise. Since 2017, he has served as the founder and president of Matterhorn Energy, an independent oil company. In this role, Mr. Cherry analyzes more than 1,000 wells to determine top performers and assesses the impact of geologic rock characteristics on drilling and well performance, along with the relationship between performance and best practices in completion design. Additionally, he reviews rock type, determines mud properties for high penetration rate and low-cost drilling and secures the capital to execute initial drilling. For the past three years, since 2018, Mr. Cherry has served as an advisory board member to the University of Texas College of Science in El Paso.
Commencing his career in 1975, Mr. Cherry’s first employment was with Amoco Production Company as a district engineer where he was grounded in reservoir engineering, advanced drilling and completion operations until 1980. From 1980 to 1986, he was an engineering manager with the Andover Oil Company before serving Bristol Resources Corporation as chairman, president and CEO from 1986 to 1999. Progressing in his career with executive-level positions, Mr. Cherry was the founder, president and CEO of CEC Energy Consultants from 1999 to 2011, as well as executive vice president and board member to Bluestem Energy from 2011 to 2013. Finally, before spearheading Matterhorn Energy, he was president of R Lacy/Crain Energy from 2013 to 2016. Looking back, Mr. Cherry attributes his success to his father, Holland H. Cherry, who showed him how to work hard and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Mr. Cherry has planned and oversaw hundreds of completed vertical and horizontal drilling operations in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. A professional petroleum engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers, he also holds certifications in IADC Well Control/Blowout Prevention and SafeLandUSA Onshore Rig Safety. Today, he remains a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In five years’ time, the engineering mogul hopes to serve on an advisory board to a major company in order to bring his skills and experiences to help them accomplish bigger goals. Also wanting all of his wells to outperform, he wants to work with young engineers and work to strengthen their abilities in the field. Mr. Cherry received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas, El Paso in 1975.
