Robert M. Shields, AICP, State Agency Manager at New York State Homes & Community Renewal, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in state government.
Desiring to help others and make a difference in the world, Mr. Shields earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 1974. Two years later, he had acquired a Master of Regional Planning from Syracuse University. His first professional position was that of an associate planner in the Department of Development and Planning in Gary, Indiana. He remained there for two years, going on to relocate to the Department of Urban and Economic Development in Utica, New York. By 1984, he acquired a position in the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal as the representative for housing and community development. This was the first of many titles within the company, as he went on to become the director of contract administration and, later, the assistant director of community development. In 2016, he retired as the state agency manager and the housing and community renewal manager.
As an active member of his industry, Mr. Shields maintains affiliation with a number of distinguished organizations. He is a lifetime member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and previously served as the secretary, treasurer, vice president and president for the Notre Dame Club of Mohawk Valley. He has additionally been active with the American Planning Association and the Optimists. Outside of his professional ventures, Mr. Shields enjoys sports and music. As a testament to his success, he is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the East.
