Title: Accountant and Trustee
Company: Grimmett and Company
Location: Kamas, Utah, United States
Tom Grimmett, Accountant and Trustee at Grimmett and Company, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in tax and corporate accounting.
As a young man, Mr. Grimmett did not anticipate finding his success or passion in accounting. He attended Utah State University, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in business management and a minor in accounting, shying away from the discipline in spite of his obvious talents due to the tedium of bookkeeping in an analog era. After a series of accounting jobs with U.S. Steel and A.G. Edwards & Sons, he became convinced that his problem was not in accounting, but rather the corporate world. Mr. Grimmett subsequently bought into the Desert Financial Group, a Las Vegas-based securities and accounting firm where he recalls that his career “just took off.”
After major cases for clients including the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino, Mr. Grimmett began forensic accounting work for a court-appointed receiver handling several mysterious savings and loans bankruptcies. He was appointed as a federal bankruptcy trustee for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Nevada, with which he was active as an expert witness and receiver in bankruptcy and taxation cases in state, federal and family courts. His bankruptcy practice led to key rulings in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that established precedent for trustee immunity and bankruptcy exemptions, as well as a suit regarding the application of criminal statutes in bankruptcy proceedings that was eventually heard by the Supreme Court of the United States. As an expert in complex tax and bankruptcy law, Mr. Grimmett taught tax and investment seminars throughout the 1980s, and advised the Clark County and Nevada Bankruptcy Courts.
Since 1978, Mr. Grimmett has thrived as the president of T.R. Grimmett Inc., for which he also serves as Trustee and continues his accounting practice. In 2018, he began to transition toward retirement, focusing on personal projects including the development of a 1200-acre ranch in Clark County, and volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America, the Lions Club and youth soccer teams. He counsels others in his field to use their strengths, both personal and financial, to contribute to the community, and is proud of a career record of advocacy for fairness and transparency in financial proceedings. Mr. Grimmett has been included in several previous editions of Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
