Thomas J. McGonigle, Partner at Murphy & McGonigle, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in securities regulation.
Mr. McGonigle knew he wanted to become a lawyer since he was a young boy watching reruns of “Perry Mason.” He went on to attend the University of Scranton, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in political science in 1979. Shortly thereafter, he achieved a Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1982. Today, Mr. McGonigle is certified to practice law in the New York and the District of Columbia, as well as before the Supreme Court of the U.S., U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Backed by more than 35 years of professional expertise, Mr. McGonigle has excelled as a partner of Murphy & McGonigle since 2010. Specializing in securities and investment regulation, his clients include broker/dealers, investment advisers, public companies, banks and individuals. Additionally, Mr. McGonigle has experience in matters involving equity, fixed income and derivative trading, as well as fiduciary investment regulatory registration and transactional disclosure issues alike, among other areas. Mr. McGonigle also counsels broker-dealers and investment advisors on AML issues and has defended a broker-dealer in an AML self-regulatory organization investigation.
Prior to his current position, Mr. McGonigle was a partner of LeClairRyan from 2001 to 2010, as well as a partner with McGuireWoods, LLP from 1988 to 2001. Between 1984 and 1988, he had served the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as a staff attorney turned branch chief of the Division of Enforcement. Earlier, from 1982 to 1984, he gained initial experience as assistant district attorney of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. Likewise, Mr. McGonigle is a past member of the board of trustees to Elizabeth Town College. He continues to maintain affiliation with the Army and Navy Club and the American Bar Association.
Notably, Mr. McGonigle was the recipient of the Frank O’Hara Outstanding Alumnus of the University Award in 2019. Named to Super Lawyers from 2012 to 2015, he was also honored as the Securities Regulation Lawyer of the Year in the Washington, D.C. Market by Best Lawyers in America in 2016. Mr. McGonigle attributes his vast success to tremendous support from family, friends and colleagues. In five years’ time, he hopes to mentor the next generation of lawyers in order to help the transition of leaders at Murphy & McGonigle, which currently has 60 lawyers and 95 employees in total.
